Since 2024, the SAT has been fully digital, taken through the College Board's Bluebook app instead of on paper. The format changed more than just the delivery method: the test is shorter now (2 hours and 14 minutes instead of 3), you can use a calculator on every math question, reading passages are short with one question each instead of long passages with several questions attached, and the test adjusts to you as you go.

That last part is the one students ask about most. The digital SAT splits into two sections — Reading and Writing, then Math — and each section splits into two timed modules. How you do on the first module decides whether your second module comes back a bit easier or a bit harder. It doesn't adjust question-by-question while you're answering; it only shifts between modules, based on your overall performance on the one before it. In total you'll see 98 questions: 54 in Reading and Writing (27 per module, 64 minutes total) and 44 in Math (22 per module, 70 minutes total).

Knowing the shape of the test before you sit down for it makes the whole thing far less unsettling. That's what a practice test is actually for — not just answering questions, but getting used to timing yourself, using the built-in calculator, and pacing through two modules that don't look identical.

What you get with LumaPrep's free practice tests

LumaPrep gives you 5 full-length practice tests, free, with no limit on retakes. Each one is timed to match the real test's section lengths and includes a built-in calculator, so you're not switching between apps mid-test — and you get your score the moment you finish, not days later like an official exam.

Because retakes are unlimited, you can use these differently than the one real shot you get on test day: take test 1 cold to see your starting point, then come back to any of the five as many times as you want while you work on specific weak spots.

How to read your score report and what to do next

Finishing a practice test is the easy part — the score report is where studying actually starts. Look past the overall number first and check the section breakdown, Reading and Writing versus Math, since most students are unevenly split between the two, and that split is what should decide where your time goes this week.

Every question you got wrong is a data point, not just a mistake. Mistake Review collects every question you've missed across every session — not just one test — and lets you retest just those in a focused round, instead of redoing all 98 questions to work on the ten that are actually tripping you up. Once you've got a sense of your weak spots, the full question bank breaks things down by topic with a step-by-step explanation on every question — see SAT Practice Questions With Step-by-Step Explanations.

Digital SAT practice test FAQ

  • Is this the same length as the real digital SAT? Yes — timed to the same 64 minutes for Reading and Writing and 70 minutes for Math as the official test.
  • Do I need to download anything? No, it runs in your browser.
  • Can I retake the same test? Yes, as many times as you want, free, on any of the 5 tests.
  • Does this replace an official Bluebook practice test? It's meant to complement it, not replace it — take at least one official practice test in Bluebook itself before test day so the interface isn't a surprise, and use LumaPrep for repeated practice and score tracking in between.
